For residents of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, installing an energy-efficient geothermal heating and cooling system just got a lot more affordable! Anne Arundel County homeowners can now reap the benefit of a Geothermal Property Tax Credit, thanks to a new bill just approved by the county Council. The bill will allow homeowners to deduct up to $2,500 of the cost of a new geothermal heating and cooling system from their property taxes. The benefit is a one-time credit, and can be used on any geothermal heating or cooling system installed after January 1, 2009.

Geothermal: the Alternative to Traditional HVAC

Because of Geothermal Systems’ low monthly utility bills, earth-friendly energy, and quiet operating, more and more builders and homeowners are installing Geothermal HVAC systems rather than traditional HVAC systems. Geothermal heating and cooling systems save on average $200 on a $500 energy bill per month, for the rest of your life, not to mention almost zero maintenance, an average 22-year life span, and an added bonus of free hot water.

In previous decades, when geothermal systems were still considered new technology, installation costs made it unrealistic for many homeowners. But now geothermal has become widespread; as a result, the prices have become more competitive. The federal government recently decided to subsidize up to 30% of the cost of Geothermal installation as part of its EnergyStar green energy initiative, making geothermal installation even more affordable.

When Anne Arundel County residents combine the existing Federal and State benefits and rebates with the new county Property Tax Credit, geothermal installation just became the most affordable it has ever been.
